February 27, 2006 - St. Regis Hotel, San Francisco
The 1st Annual Moet & Hennessy tasting at the St. Regis was no short of luxury. The hotel is absolutely stunning. The moment you walk in the lobby, a long, dark and modern fireplace greets you. It's gorgeous. Words can't describe it. Just look at the picture.
(photo from official stregis website)Anyway, back to the tasting. I felt so spoiled. I started with Chandon, Moet, Clicquot and Ruinart, peanuts compared to what was to come. Walking into the main ballroom, I took a quick tour and stopped by the Domaine Chandon still booth for some Pinot Noir 2004 and Pinot Meunier 2003, followed by Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir 2004, Casa Lapostolle Cuvee Alexandre Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 . I lost my date at the Glenmorangie and Ardbeg booth so I sauntered around Chopin, Belvedere, Grey Goose and 10 Cane (yummy mojitos). Sometime during the night I also stopped by the Grand Marnier booth where they were pouring Cordon Rouge, Cuvee du Centenaire, and Cuvee du Cent Cinquantenaire. They were all a bit too much for me. Needless to say, I did not stop at the Hennessy table. I still had to drive across the Bay Bridge in 60mph winds and heavy rain.
Did I mention the delicatable bite sized fruit tarts, mini pyramid shaped jellys and handmade lollies? A sushi chef was on call to make whatever you wanted. There was even a prime rib station I think! Voss was handing out still and sparkling water. Truly luxury.
Around this time, a champagne seminar was beginning upstairs and we decided to join. Oh my, was that a good idea. Nevermind what the speaker was saying, not that anyone was really listening anyway.
Six champagnes took the stage:
1998 Dom Perignon
1995 Dom Perignon Rose
1996 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame
1995 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame Rose
Krug Grande Cuvee
Krug Rose
Did you read that? Read it again.
Between me (the wine buyer), my date (the engineering PhD), and two restauranteurs sitting next to us, the hands down best bubbly of the bunch was the Krug Grande Cuvee. And the worst of the bunch was the Clicquot Rose (too bubblegum fruity, even the color was much darker than the other roses). Worst of the non-rose was surprisingly Dom. Best of the rose was Krug as well.
The biggest regret of the night was not having to taste a little bit from the two bottles of 1995 Chateau D'Yquem that was poured. If only, if only, if only! Timing, I guess, has never been a virtue of mine.
Constant self pick-me-up: Krug, Krug, Krug!
